Observation Narrative
This plot is characteristic of mixed oak stand on the gentle crest of Lost Mountain, most of which lies above 1000 m elevation. Quercus montana and Q. rubra form most of the canopy, with a subcanopy of Amelanchier laevis, Magnolia fraseri, and Oxydendrum arboreum. The patchy shrub layer is composed mostly of tree saplings, with discrete patches of Rhododendron maximum, Hamamelis virginiana, and Acer pensylvanicum also present. Herbaceous plants are sparse. Oak seedlings are abundant but little other evidence of oak recruitment was seen.
